Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type locality not stated, although unit is described in measured sections in north-central NJ. Origin of name not stated by authors, but probably named from Big Spring, a spring on northwest side of NJ Route 94, about 5 km southwest of Hamburg, Sussex Co., NJ (Markewicz and Dalton, 1977).

Appalachian basin
