Anza Formation (CA*)
late Tertiary (Miocene)*
Type locality: Split Mountain gorge, in secs. 25 and 36, T. 13 S., R. 8 E., Borrego Mountain SE 7.5-min quadrangle, San Diego Co., southern CA. Named from Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the bdry. of which lies 0.5 mi (0.8 km) east of Split Mountain gorge (Woodard, 1974).
Type area: Split Mountain gorge, [in secs. 25 and 36, T. 13 S., R. 8 E., across southwestern corner of Borrego Mountain SE quadrangle and northwestern corner of Carrizo Mtn. NE quadrangle, adjacent to San Diego-Imperial Co. line, Split Mountain, southern CA]. Name credited to G.D. Woodard, 1963, Univ. Calif., Berkeley, unpub. PhD dissert. (Merriam and Bandy, 1965; Woodard, 1967).
