Named from the old western Ontario district of Algoma, Canada, in which these plutonics are well displayed and widely distributed (A.C. Lawson, Cong. Geol. Intl., 12th sess., Toronto, Canada; see also Wilmarth, 1925, USGS Bull. 769, p. 123-124).
