Alamitos Formation of Madera Group (NM*-notable exposures in Sangre de Cristo Mountains)


Geologic age:

Late Pennsylvanian*


Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Primary type section (upper part of formation): in Alamitos Canyon, Pecos area, San Miguel Co., north-central NM, about 25 mi west of Las Vegas, NV (Sutherland, 1963).
Secondary type section (lower part of formation): on ridge between Pecos Valley and Alamitos Canyon, Pecos area, San Miguel Co., north-central NM (Sutherland, 1963).
Reference section (section K): measured in roadcuts and hogback ridges just north of Highway 3 northwest and northeast of St. Joseph Church, southeastern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Mora and San Miguel Cos., north-central NM (Baltz and Meyers, 1999).
