Summary:

Named by Clark (1966 PhD thesis) for Zayante Creek about 2 mi northeast of Zayante. Type section designated along Zayante Creek from axis of anticline (NW/4 sec.31 T9S R1W) northward to contact with Vaqueros Sandstone (SW/4 sec.30 T9S R1W) [Felton 7.5' quad] Santa Cruz Co, CA. Rocks formerly included in Vaqueros Sandstone as mapped by Branner and others (1909) and Jennings and Burnett (1961). Extends from 2 mi east of Boulder Creek eastward for about 6 mi. Composed predominantly of thick to very thick bedded, yellowish-orange arkosic sandstone with thin interbeds of green and red siltstone, and lenses and thick interbeds of pebble and cobble conglomerate. Is about 1600 ft at type and about 1800 ft thick near Lompico Creek. Conformably overlies San Lorenzo Formation; in depositional contact or locally faulted against Vaqueros Sandstone. Age is Oligocene (Zemorrian).
