Summary:

Named York Slate to replace "slate of York region" of previous authors. Also rocks were called Hurrah Slate, Puckmummie Slate and Kuzitrin Series. Sainsbury (1972) recommended abandonment of several of these names. Original identity of various rocks units derived from York Slate shown on Bendeleben quad map, Seward Peninsula, AK. York Slate occurs widely in quad, especially along Kougarok River, along east side of Kugruk River, and in headwaters of Inmachuk River. Consists of thick sequence of carbonaceous quartz siltite with interbeds of graywacke and thin dark limestone; in most exposures metamorphosed to graphitic phyllite cut by numerous vitreous quartz veinlets; also metamorphosed to schist. Underlies Kanauguk Formation. Intercalates with Nome Group. Is Precambrian age at least in part based on stratigraphic relations.
