Summary:

Has been miscorrelated. Name has been applied to rocks of Aftonian age as well as those of Yarmouth age. "Their continued use in any context will lead to miscorrelation of stratigraphic units or assignment of erroneous numerical ages or age ranges to biotic assemblages and stratigraphic units. Redefinition ... " as "chronostratigraphic units ... will lead to confusion of stratigraphic nomenclature." "Yarmouth" paleosol is a term applied in many areas to paleosols that differ from those in the type area near Yarmouth, IA. Therefore, Yarmouth paleosol should be applied only in the type area and to paleosols that have been traced laterally from the area. Term "Yarmouth interglaciation" abandoned in chapter by Hallberg (this vol, p. 11-15).
