The West Rock Diabase, here named, intruded the New Haven Arkose at about the same time that the Talcott Basalt of the Newark Group was extruded above the arkose. It was later intruded by the Buttress Diabase. Age is Late Triassic.

The West Rock is redefined as West Rock Dolerite. It is dark-gray to greenish-gray, medium- to fine-grained, grading from basalt near contacts to fine-grained gabbro in the interior, generally massive, with columnar jointing. Age is Early Jurassic.
