Summary:

A distinctive quartzite interval within the middle of the Stumps Creek Formation of Kahatchee Mountain Group in Shelby Co., central AL, is here named the Watson Creek Sandstone Member. Metasandstone in the member forms a fairly well-defined ridge. The most distinctive rock type is dark-green fine- to medium-grained pyritic feldspathic sandstone. Bedding varies from thin to massive, with local cross-bedding. Interlayered shale and siltstone are also present and separate at least two sandstone horizons. The member reaches 778 ft in thickness in the southern part of the study area. Age of the Stumps Creek and its member is Early Cambrian(?).
