[Named for] Wailuanui Valley where it forms a narrow lava flow descending western fork of valley, Keanae area, east Maui, HI. Adopted as unit of Hana volcanic series. Composed of dark-gray olivine pahoehoe basalt containing few olivine phenocrysts 1 mm across. Older than Ohia basalt (new) but its time relationship to Pauwalu basalt (new) is unknown. Assigned middle(?) and late Pleistocene and Recent age in stratigraphic section chart of Keanae area.

Type locality: western branch of Wailuanui Stream valley [20 deg 50' 36"N, 156 deg 07' 52"W, Keanae 7.5' quad, Keanae area, northern shore of Island of Maui]. Thickness is few tens of ft. Unconformably overlies gravel overlying lavas of Kula volcanic series. Assigned Pleistocene(?) age.

Wailuanui Basalt (Stearns and Macdonald, 1942) abandoned as formally named unit and called Wailuanui flow, informal unit of Hana Volcanics. Hana Volcanics assigned Pleistocene(?) and Holocene age.
