Summary:

Named as member of Hana Volcanic Series for occurrence along Waiaaka Gulch. Best exposed in Hanawi Gulch, Nahiku area, eastern Maui, HI. Composed of single flow (called "shaly lava" by local workers) of aa and some pahoehoe of calcic andesine; rock is basaltic andesite. Is as thick as 120 ft in test hole 47, but averages 30 ft. Overlies baked red soil over Makapipi basalt (new); where Makapipi basalt has been removed by erosion, overlies gravel above Kula basaltic andesite [volcanic series] (new). Locally underlies baked red soil under Mossman basalt (new) of Hana volcanic series. Map shows middle(?) and late Pleistocene and Recent age.
