The informal Volunteer gneiss of McConnell (1988) is contained in the lowermost thrust sheet exposed in the Sauratown Mountains anticlinorium, NC. Unit is composed of several varieties of granitoid gneiss. Mapped, in part, by Espenshade and others (1975) as Elk Park Plutonic Suite. Middle Proterozoic age is based on presence of epidosite similar to that observed in the Miller Creek complex (informal).
