Named for occurrence near Old Virginia Mine, Perris-Elsinore area, Riverside County, California. Extends westward into eastern part of the Gavilan. Occurs on southwestern edge of Perris fault block. Quartz-hypersthene norite has peculiar dark color and weathers to a bronze cast. Texture is coarse hypautomorphic granular. Age is Late Jurassic(?).

Pg. 481, Table 4. Virginia quartz norite. The Virginia quartz-hypersthene norite of Dudley (1935) is referred to as Virginia quartz norite as part of plutonic series in Perris Block. Succession (approximate oldest to youngest) includes: Gavilan Peak gabbro, Virginia quartz norite, Perris and Estelle quartz diorite (Val Verde tonalite), Lakeview quartz diorite, Steele Valley granodiorite, Cajalco quartz monzonite, and La Posta quartz diorite. Age of series is late Mesozoic.

In Elsinore 30-min quadrangle, Virginia quartz-hypersthene norite of Dudley (1935) is variety of San Marcos gabbro as defined by F.S. Miller (1937, GSA Bull. v.48 p.1397-1426).
