Ostrom, M.E., 1967, Paleozoic stratigraphic nomenclature for Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Information Circular, no. 8, 1 sheet.

Summary:

Author proposes that names Dresbach and Franconia be reserved for use as stage names in biostratigraphy and that names Elk Mound and Tunnel City be used as lithostratigraphic replacements with minor modifications. Tunnel City Group as defined consists of all strata above Elk Mound Group and below St. Lawrence Formation or Jordan Sandstone.

Leigh, and T.A. Frolking: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Information Circular, IC 67, 68 p., (incl. geologic map, scale 1:100,000)

Summary:

Tunnel City treated as formation in this report as its subdivisions could not be successfully mapped. [Tunnel City Group used by Clayton (1989: WI Info Circ 66) in neighboring Juneau Co.] Authors state unit has been recognized in southern WI, MI, IL, IN, MN and IA, but give no references. Lone Rock Member makes up all of the Tunnel City Formation in southwestern and southeastern WI. Mazomanie Member is a wedge in the middle of the Lone Rock in much of south-central WI. Along the crest of the Wisconsin arch, Tunnel City Formation consists largely of the Mazomanie. Unit is typically 30 to 45 m thick in Sauk Co. Consists for the most part of sandstone and fine to very fine sand. Overlies Wonewoc Formation; underlies St. Lawrence Formation; interfingers(?) Parfreys Glen Formation (new name) near Baraboo Hills.
