Summary:

Named for Teklanika River, tributary of Toklat River. Type section designated as ridge along east side of upper Teklanika River from 6.5 to 5 km south of Calico Creek, Mount McKinley National Park, central Alaska Range, Healy C-6 quad, AK. Formerly part of Cantwell Formation (Eldridge, 1900). Consists of andesite, rhyolite, and basalt flows with interbedded felsic pyroclastic mudstone, tuff, and tuff breccia. Color is dark-gray which weathers brown and purple. Is over 3,750 m thick. Divided into informal units (A thru F). Conformably and unconformably overlies Cantwell Formation; unconformably underlies Quaternary alluvium. Is Paleocene age based on K-Ar determinations on plagioclase of 60.6 to 41.8 Ma.

Summary:

Teklanika Formation (Gilbert and others, 1976) not used. Original definition of Cantwell Formation by Brooks (1911) retained because Gilbert and others' (1976) restriction of name Cantwell violates Article 14b of Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature (American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, 1974).
