Pg. 298-299 (pl. 1), 302-303. Stella Lake Quartzite. Name proposed for the uppermost formation (of 6) of the McCoy Creek Group (new). Strata are beneath a regional unconformity and were previously included in Prospect Mountain Quartzite (restricted). Is a white to light-gray, massive-appearing, vitreous quartzite; weathers white in contrast to the brownish weathering of the overlying Prospect Mountain Quartzite. Upper part is white, vitreous, coarse-grained to gritty with minor cross-bedding, and pebbly streaks and lenses; pebbles (as much as half-inch in diameter) are well rounded, chiefly quartz, some red jasper. Thickness 700 to 800 feet at type locality. Overlies Osceola Argillite (new) of McCoy Creek Group. Age is late Precambrian. Report includes geologic map.
Type locality (see geologic map): either north[?] or south[?] of Stella Lake, northern part of southern Snake Range, Wheeler Peak 7.5-min quadrangle, White Pine Co., NV. Origin of name not stated, but probably named from Stella Lake, near the head of Lehman Creek, southern Snake Range, White Pine Co., northeastern NV (Great Basin region).
[Discrepancy in GNU records (USGS DDS-6; Denver GNULEX, Oct. 26, 1989) concerning whether type locality occurs north or south of Stella Lake. --unresolved.]
