Summary:

Named for exposures on Stanislaus River. Type locality designated as exposures on Bald Peak-Red Peak ridge which separates Clarks Fork on north from Deadman Creek, both tributaries of Middle Fork of Stanislaus River, Dardanelles Cone and Sonora Pass 15' quad, Tuolome Co, CA. Three latite units of Ransome (1898) and Slemmons (1953), are now considered members of formation (ascending): Table Mountain Latite Member, Eureka Valley Member (new), and Dardanelles Member. Formation attains maximum thickness of more than 1500 ft near Sonora Pass. Unconformably overlies Relief Peak Formation (new). Underlies Disaster Peak Formation (new). Age is early Pliocene based on K-Ar determinations which yield ages of 9.3 to 8.8 Ma.
