Named for scattered exposures at Stambaugh High School in town of Stambaugh, in the Iron River-Crystal Falls district, southern Iron Co, MI in the Lake Superior region. Is part of Paint River group (new) of Animikie series. Are iron-rich rocks that range from [meta-] chlorite mudstone and slate to a laminated, cherty siderite-magnetite rock. Referred to locally as magnetic slate. Is uniquely magnetic over most of district and traceable through magnetic surveying. Better exposures in eastern part of district. Underlain by Hiawatha graywacke (new) and overlain by Fortune Lakes slate (new). Stratigraphic sequence chart. Is middle Precambrian in age.
