Summary:

Named as tongue in Sagavanirktok Formation after Staines River. Type section designated as interval between 7710 and 8590 ft in West Staines State-2 well, sec.25 T9N R22E [Flaxman Island quad, northern AK]. Present in wells throughout Point Thomson area and can be traced in subsurface 20 to 30 mi to south and west where it thickens and grades into main body of Sagavanirktok; grades into Canning Formation (new) short distance to north and east of West Staines State-2 well. Underlies Mikkelsen Tongue (new) of Canning Formation. Palynomorph data indicate Paleocene age.
