Deiss, C.F., 1933, Paleozoic formations of northwestern Montana: Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Memoir, no. 6, 51 p.

Summary:

Pg. 44 and passim. Spotted Bear limestone member of Jefferson limestone. Top member of Jefferson limestone in Spotted Bear, Pentagon, and Monitor Mountains. Thickesst (426 feet) on Monitor Mountain; thinnest (282 feet) on Pentagon Mountain; not known to be present in intervening area. Most striking feature is variety of limestones and shales that compose the member. Consists of (descending): (1) 4 feet of platy cream-white argillaceous limestone that weathers light buff; (2) 22 feet of massive platy brown-gray crystalline limestone that weathers gray; (3) gray medium-bedded limestone in upper and lower parts and massive argillaceous tan-gray finely crystalline limestone, 61 feet; (4) gray to tan-gray argillaceous crystalline limestone that weathers irregular gray in lower part and sugary gray in upper part, 114 feet; (5) massive thin-bedded gray crystalline limestone, 86 feet, thicker-bedded upward; weathers dull gray. Disconformably underlies Silvertip conglomerate member of Madison limestone and overlies Lone Butte limestone member of Jefferson limestone. Age is Middle Devonian.
Well exposed btw. elevations of 6,880 and 7,005 feet on northwest slope of Spotted Bear Mountain, in NE/4 sec. 26, T. 25 N., R. 15 W., [Spotted Bear Mountain 7.5-min quadrangle, Flathead Co.], northwestern MT.
