Summary:

Named as 6th from lowermost member (of 7) of Deer Butte Formation for basalt exposed on southwestern side of Sourdough Basin and at type locality on northern side of Dry Creek inlet (N/2 sec.24 T23S R43E), Malheur Co, OR. Upper part is dusky-brown olivine basalt, vesiculated, columnar jointing well developed, ledge former (60 ft thick); middle part is rich volcanic sandstone, interbed between basalts (5 ft thick); lower part is olivine basalt (24 ft thick). Thickness at type section of Deer Butte Formation is 89 ft. Overlies Burnt Mountain Member; underlies Mitchell Butte Member (both new and of Deer Butte Formation). Deer Butte Formation is Miocene and early Pliocene(?) age.
