Summary:

Reassigned as the basal member of Little Cedar Formation (new), basal formation of Cedar Valley Group (rank raised). "Type locality completely covered"; reference section designated at Conklin Co, in Johnson Co, IA where member is composed of 5+ m of limestone that is sandy at base and whose lower part of upper part has solitary rugosans and hemispherical or domal stromatoporoids. Member is dominated by fine skeletal muddy calcarenite with scattered shaly or carbonaceous partings. Hardgrounds are locally developed. The basal sandy part includes a unit called "Hoing Sandstone" in parts of northern MO and western IL. Is limited to areas of east-central and southeast IA on Iowa shelf and adjacent north MO on the [Lincoln anticline?] and IL on [Wisconsin arch? and Illinois basin?]. Varies between 1.5 and 12 m thick; thinnest in southeast; thickens northward. Nomenclature chart. Graphic sections. Cross section. Overlies Davenport Member newly assigned to Pinicon Ridge Formation (new) of Wapsipinicon Group (rank raised). Upper contact gradational with Rapid Member which is newly assigned to Little Cedar Formation. Conodonts span upper Middle VARCUS through Lower HERMANNI-CRISTATUS subzones. Echinoderm debris, bryozoans, gastropods, rostroconchs, fish debris, chitinozoans, forams, algae. Represents a minor transgressive-regressive subcycle within larger cycle. Of Givetian, or late Middle Devonian age.
