Summary:

Pg. 306-314, fig. 5. Snake Creek Formation of Ogallala Group. In northwestern Nebraska, the Snake Creek Formation, basal formation of the Ogallala, is stratigraphically restricted. Excludes "Lower Snake Creek" beds (early Barstovian NALMA) of Matthew (Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. Bull., v. 50, art. 2, p. 71, 1924) which are transferred to the disconformably underlying Olcott Formation (new) of Hemingford Group. Subdivided into 3 new members (in descending order) /Johnson [preempted], Laucomer, and Murphy; [see also entries under individual members]. Fossils (vertebrates). Includes Upper Snake Creek fauna (Clarendonian NALMA), APHELOPS Draw fauna (early Hemphillian NALMA), and ZX Bar local fauna (late Hemphillian NALMA). As restricted, the age of the Snake Creek is middle to late Miocene (Clarendonian to Hemphillian NALMA).
Type locality (discovery site of HESPEROPITHECUS HAROLDCOOKII of Matthew, 1923, Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. Nov., no. 53, p. 11): on top of Matthew's (Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. Bull., v. 50, art. 2, 1924, p. 63, fig. 1) "Olcott Hill," in NE/4 SW/4 SE/4 sec. 3, T. 25 N., R. 55 W., [University Lake NW 7.5-min quadrangle], Sioux Co., northwestern NE.
