Summary:

Named as a member of Solberg schist (new) of Dickinson group (new) for Skunk Creek, tributary of East Branch of Sturgeon River, which crosses iron-rich member near southeast corner sec 17, T42N, R28W, Dickinson Co, northwest MI in Lake Superior region. Rock is exposed only in small outcrop in NE1/4 sec 23, T42N, R29W, but magnetic anomaly caused by rock has been traced for over 20 mi. Drill core in area shows three interlayered lithologies: 1) biotite hornblende schist with magnetite layers; 2) thin-bedded rock with alternating layers of metachert and magnetite; and 3) mixtures of hornblende, biotite, grunerite, garnet, and epidote. Is about 100 ft thick and is interlayered with Solberg schist, occurring about 1,000 ft below top (of Solberg schist). Stratigraphic sequence chart. Is considered pre-Animikie in age; assigned to early Precambrian.
