Named the Shochary sandstone [member] of the Martinsburg formation for Shochary Ridge, Berks and Lehigh Cos., south-central and east-central PA. Unit is a massive sandstone in upper part of formation. Disconformably underlies the Tuscarora sandstone. Lithologically, stratigraphically, and faunally appears to correlate with the Fairview sandstone in south-central sections. The Shochary is of Late Ordovician (early Maysvillian) age.

Revised the Shochary to the Shochary sandstone of the Martinsburg group. Consists of medium- to fine-grained, well sorted, even-bedded, arkosic sandstone and minor conglomerate. Dark-gray to gray-brown sandstone occurs in beds up to 4 feet thick and is interbedded with limestone and quartz-pebble, limestone, and shale-chip conglomerate. Thickness is 750 feet at type locality. Overlies Dauphin shale of Martinsburg group.

The Shochary Sandstone is removed from the Martinsburg Group; its relationship to the Martinsburg Formation is uncertain. Overlies unnamed shale and underlies the Spitzenberg Conglomerate. The age of the Shochary is changed to Middle and Late Ordovician based on possible correlation to Martinsburg Formation.
