Summary:

Pg. 316-338. Sewell marls. Dark greensand marls, with glauconite thickly disseminated. Thickness 20 to 30 feet. Basal division of Rancocas formation. Overlies Monmouth formation and underlies Vincentown limesands, the top division of Rancocas formation. Age is Eocene.
Named from town of Sewell, northwestern Gloucester Co., NJ.
[GNC remark (ca. 1936, US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896, p. 1962): †Sewell Formation of Rancocas Group abandoned. This name being preoccupied, it was replaced with Hornerstown marl, which is now classified as a formation of Rancocas group. See Clark (1907) entry under Hornerstown.]
