Summary:

First published use as a member of Gallup Sandstone. Named for Sanostee Trading Post north of Gallup in McKinley Co, NM in the San Juan basin. Gradational contact with Mancos Shale. Intent to name not stated. Upper contact not discussed. Relationship to other part of Gallup not discussed. This sandstone was deposited in a infra-surfzone, surfzone, and on a beach. Has giant ripple foresets in the surfzone phase that indicate longshore current flow toward northwest and southeast. Near Sanostee Trading Post, tidal inlet deposits of current ripple cross-bedded units oriented northeast and southwest record ebb and flow directions. Character of lithology, thickness, areal extent, and relationship to other stratigraphic units of sandstone not discussed. Of Late Cretaceous age.
