Summary:

Named as a formation in Slatestone group. Named for Sand Gap, a short distance north of Elk Valley, Pioneer quad, Campbell Co., eastern TN. In Oneida and Huntsville areas, caps higher hills, forming extensive flats above Wartburg sandstone of Crooked Fork group (new). Consists of both massive and thin facies of sandstone. Thickness is about 100 ft near Sand Gap and about 5 ft in Cross Mountain section. Underlies a shale interval 40 to 120 ft thick that in turn underlies Newcomb sandstone (new); overlies a shale interval 40 to 170 ft thick that in turn overlies Petros sandstone (new). Age is Pennsylvanian (Pottsville series). Report includes geologic maps, cross sections, stratigraphic sections, and correlation chart.
