The Rottenwood Creek Quartzite of the Sandy Springs Group is here named. It gradationally overlies the Factory Shoals Formation, and is the uppermost unit of the Sandy Springs. It is a massive, muscovite-bearing quartzite, up to 50 m thick.

The Rottenwood Creek Quartzite of the Sandy Springs Group is here abandoned because work in the type area of the Sandy Springs shows that the Chattahoochee Palisades Quartzite and the Rottenwood Creek are exposed parts of a single unit repeated by folding. All rocks are assigned to the Chattahoochee Palisades.
