Merriam, J.C., 1919, Tertiary mammalian faunas of the Mohave Desert: University of California Publications in Geological Sciences, v. 11, no. 5, p. 438-585.

Summary:

There may be some justification for name "Red Rock Canyon beds, formation or group" for stratigraphic sequence containing Ricardo fauna, but G.K. Gilbert (Geog. and Geol. Expl. W 100th Mer., p.142-143, 1875) and H.W. Fairbanks (Amer. Geol. v.176 p.68-69, 1896) did not use name for nomenclature purposes. Following discovery that fauna from beds at Red Rock Canyon [at Ricardo, eastern part of Kern Co, CA] is sharply distinct from that in Barstow section as representing "Ricardo fauna", "Ricardo beds" or "Ricardo Pliocene", author therefore prefers name "Ricardo formation" or "Ricardo group".
