Named for occurrence at Punchbowl (Puuowaena) crater, city of Honolulu [Honolulu 7.5' quad] Island of Oahu. Composed of 3 "rock formations": (1) tuff which makes up main mass of crater, (2) black ash, and (3) basalt. Black ash and basalt were result of later eruption than that of the tuff. Tuff is palagonitic variety somewhat coarser than Diamond Head tuff. Exposed over area less than 1 sq mi. On W side of rim of crater is 480 ft high. Overlies and flanks Koolau basalt.

Punchbowl tuff of Wentworth (1926) is renamed Punchbowl volcanics, which includes the black ash and basalt shown to be conformable with the tuff. Included in Honolulu volcanic series. Unconformably underlies Sugar Loaf and Tantalus firefountain deposits. Underlies reef limestone of Waimanola stand of sea and displaced stream valley graded to Waipio stand. Probably erupted during Waipio stand of sea. Assigned middle(?) and late Pleistocene age.

K-Ar dates on nephelinite from Punchbowl lava from Honolulu Volcanic Series range from 297 +/-6 ka to 296 +/-10 ka.

K-Ar age on basalt from Punchbowl vent of Honolulu Volcanic Series is 0.53 +/-0.04 Ma. (K-Ar age from Gramlich and others, 1971, recalculated based on decay constants used in this study, is 0.304 +/-0.05 Ma.)

Punchbowl Volcanics (Stearns, IN Stearns and Vaksvik, 1935) abandoned as formally named unit and called Punchbowl flows (and associated cone), an informal unit in Honolulu Volcanics.
