Two or three thick basalt flows and interbedded volcaniclastic rocks at Preakness Mountain, NJ, are here named Preakness Basalt of the Newark Supergroup. This unit was the Second Watchung basalt of Darton (1890). It overlies the Feltville Formation and underlies the Towaco Formation. Thickness is 500 m near the type section. Age is Early Jurassic.

Age of the Preakness Basalt is Hettangian based on radiometric ages.

The Preakness Basalt of Olsen (1980) is here adopted by the USGS and is assigned to the revised Brunswick Group in NJ and NY.
