Summary:

Named as part of Fredericksburg Complex (new). Named for Po River, Spotsylvania Co., eastern VA. Crops out along Po and Ni Rivers. Excellent fresh-rock exposures may be seen along Rappahannock River from the Fall Line, at US Rte 1 in Fredericksburg and Falmouth, upstream to the dam. Consists of biotite-bearing gneiss, two-mica schist, and numerous foliated gneissic granitoid and pegmatoid bodies. [No thickness or dimensions stated.] Correlates with lower part of Hatcher Complex of Brown (1969, Geology of the Dillwyn quadrangle: VDMR Report of Investigations 10, 77 p.) Age is uncertain but is probably Late Proterozoic and (or) early Paleozoic based on stratigraphic position beneath Ta River Metamorphic Suite (new) and Holly Corner Gneiss, both of which correlate to Early Cambrian(?) Chopawamsic Formation.

Summary:

Po River Metamorphic Suite is continuous with Maidens Gneiss to the south, which in turn has been correlated with Raleigh Gneiss of Farrar (1985) in NC.
