Summary:

Pg. 11, 19, pls. 2, 3, 4. Pilot Mountain sandstone of Vowell Mountain group. New name for Pilot Knob sandstone (Glenn, 1925). Name Pilot Knob preoccupied. Thickness at designated type locality 60 feet; in Cross Mountain section 35 feet. Overlies a shale interval about 100 feet thick at base of group and underlies shale interval 35 to 90 feet thick which in turn underlies Frozen Head sandstone. Age is Early Pennsylvanian (Pottsville).
Type locality: Pilot Mountain in Duncan Flats 7.5-min quadrangle, [Anderson Co.], eastern TN. Also well developed in Petros, Windrock, Fork Mountain, Lake City, Norma, and Block quadrangles.
