[Probably named for Pilarcitos Lake or Pilarcitos Creek, San Mateo Co, CA. Name Pilarcitos sandstone first used by Lawson (1902) in abstract as formation (790 ft thick) older than Calera limestone in Franciscan. Franciscan rocks along Pilarcitos Creek and Pilarcitos Lake are mapped as Cahil sandstone of which Calera is member in San Francisco folio. Thus in effect name "Pilarcitos" is abandoned.] Age of Franciscan group is given as Jurassic(?).
