Named after Piinaau Stream, Keanae Valley, eastern Maui, HI. Included as unit of Hana volcanic series. Lava flow followed gulch cut into older alluvium along western wall of Keanae Valley. Composed of dark-gray basalt with no visible phenocrysts. Underlies Keanae basalt (new); overlies Pauwalu basalt (new) both units of Hana volcanic series. Unconformably overlies Honomanu volcanic series. Map shows middle(?) and late Pleistocene and Recent [Holocene] age.

Type locality: Piinaau Stream near mouth of Keanae Valley, N part of Island of Maui. Is few tens of ft thick. Overlies older alluvium; underlies Keanae basalt of Hana volcanic series. Assigned Pleistocene(?) age.

Piinaau Basalt of Stearns and Macdonald (1942) abandoned as formally named unit and called Piinaau flow, an informal unit of Hana Volcanics. Hana Volcanics assigned Pleistocene(?) and Holocene age.
