Summary:

Named for Paxson Mountain. Type locality designated as exposures on Paxson Mountain, Eureka Creek area, Mount Hayes A-4 quad, east-central Alaska Range, AK. Consists of basalt and amygdaloid basalt. Colors vary from olive-gray to dark-green and brown to maroon. Thickness ranges from 1,500 to 3,000 m. Is oldest unit in east-west Amphitheater syncline. Is lower formation of three in Amphitheater Group. Overlies Mankomen Group; underlies Tangle Lakes Formation (new) (Amphitheater Group). Intruded by Fish Lake Complex. Is Triassic age.
