The Palmer Creek Member of the Canton Formation, here named in the Dahlonega area, GA, was previously mapped as the Carolina gneiss by Keith (1909). It consists of biotite-quartz schist with hornblende or garnet. The boundary between the Palmer Creek and the underlying Proctor Creek is gradational at the lowest occurrence of biotite-quartz schist. It is in fault contact with the overlying Chestatee Member of the Canton at the first occurrence of interlayered felsic gneiss and amphibolite. Where the Chestatee Member is absent the Palmer Creek grades into the Helen Member of the Canton at the first appearance of biotite-plagioclase-quartz gneiss. Age is Late Proterozoic and (or) early Paleozoic.
