Summary:

Named for occurrence along Paakea Gulch, Nahiku area, east Maui. Included as unit of Hana volcanic series. Flow divides into two branches along valleys of Kapaula and Paakea Streams; also occurs on Moku Huki Island. Composed of olivine basalt in aa flow with well-developed columnar jointing. Is 41 ft thick in test hole 12 but generally 10 to 20 ft thick. Is 150 ft at mouth of Paakea Gulch. Overlies stream gravel in tunnel 43; overlies Kapaula basaltic andesite (new) near Kapaula Stream and Waiaaka basaltic andesite (new) (both of Hana volcanic series). Map shows middle(?) and late Pleistocene and Recent age.

Summary:

Type locality: Paakea Gulch [20 deg 49' 21"N, 156 deg 07' 06"W, Nahiku 7.5' quad] Nahiku area, northeastern side of Island of Maui. Assigned Pleistocene(?) age based on stratigraphic relation to stand of sea 25 ft lower than at present.

Summary:

Paakea Basalt (Stearns and Macdonald, 1942) abandoned as formally named unit and called Paakea flow, an informal unit of Hana Volcanics. Hana Volcanics assigned Pleistocene(?) and Holocene age.
