Summary:

Named as a cosmopolitan normal polarity event within Matuyama reversed epoch (new). Derivation of name not discussed [though presumably named for Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, eastern Africa]. Olduvai was a short term event represented in volcanic rocks dated at 1.9 m.y.
