Typically exposed in northwest bank of Yukon River for 2 to 10 mi above Nulato, lower Yukon and Nulato Bay districts, west-central AK. Includes Nulato sandstones of Dall and Harris (1892). Consists of marine sandstone and shale probably about 3000 ft thick. Contains marine invertebrates and few fossil plants. Conformably overlies Melozi formation (new). Conformably underlies Kaltag formation (new). Age is Late Cretaceous based on fossils. [Extensive list of fossils identified by several paleontologists included in report.]

[Nulato Formation is removed from Shaktolik Group due to abandonment of name Shaktolik.] Age is Early and Late Cretaceous due to recent discovery of Cenomanian mollusk TURRILITES ACUTUS Passy in upper part of marine beds of Nulato on Anvik River (D.L. Jones, written commun., 1968).
