New Creek Limestone mentioned in relation to Elbow Ridge Sandstone. In area around Hancock, MD, entire Lower Devonian sequence undergoes pronounced facies changes over the short distance of 10 or 15 mi, and the ages and relationships of these facies are not well known. In eastern part of area, all or part of the normally carbonate facies of New Creek Limestone is replaced by Elbow Ridge Sandstone.

Name New Creek Limestone is proposed for interval of massive or poorly bedded intrasparite overlying the Keyser Limestone in report area (WV,MD). Unit has been mapped as Coeymans Limestone by earlier workers because of similarity in fossils, but unit cannot be traced to type area in NY. Thickness less than 14 ft. Underlies New Scotland Formation. Age is Early Devonian.
