Term Neuse Formation proposed for Pleistocene deposits in southeastern NC. Terms Pamlico Formation and Flanner Beach have been used for these deposits. Consists of four facies: (1) clay to fine-grained quartz sand, fossiliferous, moderately to very poorly sorted bay facies; (2) fine-grained quartz sand fossiliferous, moderately sorted (shallow shelf facies); (3) very fine grained quartz sand and sand-silt-clay, fossiliferous, poorly to very poorly sorted (lagoonal facies); and (4) coquina (inlet shoal facies). Age is Pleistocene.

Name Neuse Formation is here formally proposed and type locality designated. Unit is approximately 4 m thick. Overlies Horry Clay and Croatan Formation. Underlies Pamlico Formation. Age is late Pleistocene.

Neuse Formation not used in this report because as defined, it includes all fossiliferous Pleistocene beds of NC Coastal Plain though they differ lithologically. Units 1-5 (type section of the Neuse as designated by Fallaw and Wheeler, 1969) is here informally named Beard Creek member of the Flanner Beach Formation.
