Named the Mount Carbon Member of the Pocono Formation for the village of Mount Carbon, on outskirts of Pottsville, Schuylkill Co., eastern PA. Consists of fine to coarse quartz-pebble conglomerate overlain by intercalated beds of fine pebble conglomerate, conglomeratic sandstone, quartzose sandstone, subgraywacke, siltstone, shale, and a few thin lenses of anthracite. The basal 30 feet is light-olive-gray to light-gray quartz-pebble conglomerate which grades downward into a thin coarse sandstone. The remainder of the unit is light gray and is 45 feet thick. The Mount Carbon is the upper member of the Pocono Formation. Overlies the Beckville Member and underlies the Mauch Chunk Formation. The Mount Carbon is of Early Mississippian age.
