Summary:

Named for exposures along Moonshine Creek in McCarthy C-4 quad, southern Wrangell Mountains, southern AK, designated as type area. Widely distributed in southwestern part of McCarthy C-4 quad; also recognized in McCarthy C-5 and B-4 quads. Consists of siltstone and sandstone. Divided into six informal units. Sandstones are mostly medium-grained and greenish gray. Is about 3500 ft thick at type. Unconformably overlies Nikolai Greenstone; locally disconformably overlies Kennicott Formation. Unconformably underlies Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Wrangell Lava, or Chititu Formation (new). Intruded by Tertiary sills and dikes. Age is Early and Late Cretaceous based on abundant ammonites and pelecypods ranging from late Albian to late Cenomanian.
