Summary:

Named for Montezuma, Cranberry quad, Mitchell Co., western NC. Consists of fine-grained epidotic and chloritic schists and amygdaloids of very uniform appearance. Schists is bluish black, gray, or green where fresh, becoming more green or yellowish green where weathered. Amygdaloid beds occur chiefly along northwest areas of formation and consist of bluish-gray groundmass with pea-sized cavities filled with quartz, feldspar, and epidote. Age is Precambrian (Algonkian).

Summary:

Montezuma schist of Keith (1903) here reduced in rank to Montezuma member of Grandfather Mountain formation. Age refined from Precambrian to late Precambrian. Unit is intercalated with rocks in upper part of Grandfather Mountain formation. Consists of green, blue-green, or blue-gray, fine-grained metabasalt (greenstone or greenschist). Underlain by greenish-gray, metamorphosed, porphyritic quartz-latite of Grandfather Mountain formation near eastern margin of Linville quad.
