Named [informally] for nearby Mesquite Tank. Type locality 4.5 mi southwest of Black Mountain. Deposits also found as strath terrace in Go John Mountain vicinity and occur as paired fill terraces on eastern and northwestern sides of Cave Creek. Next to highest of Cave Creek gravels; more continuous and better preserved than highest level Little Elephant Terrace deposits (Gorey, 1990). Lie approx 65 to 115 feet above modern stream channel. Consist of tan to brown sand and gravel, unconsolidated, moderately to poorly sorted, rounded to subrounded clasts in brown to reddish-brown, sandy-silt matrix; well-developed plugged caliche within 5- to 15-ft zone; locally contain up to 3 feet layered caliche and pure calcium carbonate; moderately developed clay-rich soil at surface. Total thickness varies from 3 to 30 feet. Overlie Precambrian meta-argillite--phyllite complex in Go John Mountain area; overlie late Miocene and early Pliocene Galloway and Naked Girl Canyon Members of Carefree Formation (all new). Probably correlate with Mesa Terrace of Salt River (Pewe, 1978). Age is early Pleistocene. Report includes geologic map and cross section, and stratigraphic nomenclature table.
