Summary:

Named from small exposure at type section on Magpie Hill, sec.34 T18N R54E, Pinto Summit 15' quad, on east side of Rescue Canyon, White Pine Co, NV. Alkali olivine basalt is fine grained with microphenocrysts of olivine and plagioclase. Unconformably overlies Bates Mountain Tuff; unconformably underlies Quaternary deposits. Age is Miocene based on K-Ar determination of 19.6 Ma from sample collected in sec.2 T17N R54E (M.L. Silberman, written commun., 1971). A similar basalt just south of quad boundary gave age of 20.2 Ma.
