Summary:

Named as a member of Cloverly formation for exposures (its type locality) on the northeast flank of Little Sheep Mountain, in sec 36, T56N, R95W, Big Horn Co, WY in the Bighorn basin. Mapped from Red Dome, Carbon Co, MT south to south of Hyattville, Big Horn Co, WY, all in the Bighorn basin. Is predominately variegated (gray, red, purplish- to reddish-brown) bentonitic mudstone and claystone that weathers to a gumbo with popcorn-shaped masses. Coarse-grained quartz arenite and local bentonite beds also described in measured type section. The coarse or conglomeratic sandstone has well-rounded pebbles, granules, sand-size grains, and chert. Chert to calcareous nodules of various size also present. Veins of chalcedony, selenite crystals, rounded and smooth pebbles 2 to 4 inches in diameter (gastroliths), bones, bone fragments, silicified wood also found in the mudstone. Is 250 ft thick at type where the variegated bentonitic mudstone unconformably overlies Morrison formation and unconformably underlies cliff-forming claystone of Himes member (new) of Cloverly. Interfingers with and overlies Pryor conglomerate member of Cloverly. Contact with Morrison locally gradational. Fossiliferous: freshwater gastropods and reptiles (listed). Of Early Cretaceous age. Nomenclature chart. Cross section.
