[Named for] cinder cone, Puu Laina, 1 mi northeast of Mala [village], west Maui, Lava erupted through the fan of Kalama and Kanaha Streams. Composed of picritic basalt, pahoehoe and cinder cone. Is up to 60 ft thick. Overlies 3 ft soil which in turn overlies 30 ft of conglomerate that overlies Wailuku basalt (new). Underlies 1 to 1.5 ft of soil. Stratigraphic section assigns middle(?) and late Pleistocene age.

Type locality: Puu Laina [20 deg 53' 58"N, 156 deg 40' 16"W, Lahaina 7.5' quad], cinder cone near village of Mala, east part of Island of Maui, HI. Assigned Pleistocene or Recent(?) age based on freshness of lava and relationship to Pleistocene gravels.

Because formalization of small flows are not useful, Laina Volcanics (Stearns and Macdonald, 1942) is abandoned as formally named unit and called "Laina flows and cinder cone", informal unit of Lahaina Volcanics. Lahaina Volcanics assigned Pleistocene age.
